The Ethical and Moral Bankruptcy of Andrew Cuomo

He called himself undocumented, effectively denouncing his Italian heritage and the pride his grandparents had when they became United States citizens. He has developed into a panderer, catering to a mercurial constituency when he declared “America was never great.” His latest bow to accommodate a group that he believes will support him for President of the United States is to sign a bill into law that is the most liberal abortion law in America. Indeed, Mr. Cuomo saw fit to lead the cheers at the bill signing and ordered New York landmarks to be illuminated in pink. In a few short years, Mr. Cuomo has alienated his heritage and his religion for political purposes. I say those who live by politics, die by politics.

When this new law was announced, critical responses were quick to come from all over America. Bishop Rick Stika of Tennessee called for the Governor’s excommunication and declared “this vote is so hideous and vile that it warrants the act.”

Entertainer Charlie Daniels took to the airwaves and blasted Cuomo by saying, “Satan is smiling.”

Ohio’s new Governor Mike De Wine on the other hand, stated that he would sign a bill that restricts abortion under most circumstances, as soon as a heartbeat is detected, which could be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

This uproar is a result of the provisions of New York’s new law which allows abortions up to the point of birth. At nine months, in the State of New York, the life can be terminated. This is far beyond the intention of Roe vs. Wade which I supported as a legislator and still do.

I remind those who argue for this late term immoral action of the Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004, which recognizes “an embryo or fetus in utero as a legal victim if they are injured or killed during a federal crime of violence.” This law only applied to certain crimes, but the reason that I have chosen to mention this is because in the case of the New York law, the pregnancy would have progressed far beyond the embryo stage and in my opinion, we are talking about a human life…a well-defined human life.

New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan was AWOL when this bill was being discussed in Albany and to those who are calling for censorship of Cuomo by the Church, Dolan’s response is, “Excommunication is not the answer. He will not be moved by it, so what’s the use?”

I say “the use,” Cardinal Dolan, is that a message of strong conviction must be sent to the Catholic flock – YOUR flock! Now more than ever, your voice must be loud and clear, for it has been by many of your colleagues that the tenets of the Church have been denigrated and have embarrassed the faithful. You are supposed to be a leader and your inaction is not the message Catholics want to hear.

Albany Bishop Edward Scharfenberger has spoken and declared, “the kind of procedures that are now available in New York State we would not do to a cat or a dog…It is torture.”

The Pope has been very clear about his position on the sanctity of life, but some have not heard it. To those who say that as a politician that you can respect those who are pro-abortion, I say – yes, but there is a point where personal morality must be our guide. If an elected official’s actions or performance while in office conflicts with what they declare constitutes their value system, I say that they are an imposter. I also include those who say they are opposed to ethnic or racial prejudice and then in private, act in a contradictory manner.

Am I that old-fashioned and out of touch that I see a society today that is void of ethics and increased immorality? Where is the soul of the American people? Where is their foundation?

Andrew Cuomo has proven to be that elected official whose actions are governed by the political winds, rather than his God given soul.

I leave you with this…Today a bill was introduced in Congress to make animal cruelty a felony nationwide. But Albany is now celebrating the termination of a human life.
